Parkrun tourism: families, fitness and free fun

Let's welcome parkrun tourists!

Hey, Meander Valley businesses, did you know that parkrun tourism is a thing?

Every week, a global community of walkers, runners, and volunteers gather for a free, timed 5km event. For many, the real adventure is traveling to new locations to participate, bringing a dedicated crowd of visitors directly to our community.

Parkruns are emerging as regional drawcards for attracting new visitors.

Westbury Town Common parkrun is a big draw, and these tourists often plan their trips specifically to attend. Here’s how you can make your business a go-to spot for these friendly visitors:

  • For accommodation providers

Consider offering a later checkout. This simple gesture allows guests to complete the 9am parkrun, shower, and still have time to pack up before they leave.

  • For eateries

Offer an early or late breakfast that works around the 9 am start time. You could even offer a special discount for parkrunners—they all have a unique barcode that identifies them.

  • For all businesses

Feature information about Westbury Town Common parkrun in your guest guides and online listings.

Westbury Town Common parkrun is our only local event, but many tourists visit multiple nearby locations, like Railton, Latrobe, and Port Sorrell to the west, or Kate Reed, Launceston, Hobblers Bridge, and Windsor Precinct to the north.

Parkrun tourism is thriving. Why not get in on the action and welcome these healthy, fun-loving visitors? You might even be tempted to try it out yourself—just be warned, you might get hooked!
